Our Industry Person of the Week is Vicki Spina. Vicki is an student at the University of Virginia.
Q: Why did you choose engineering?
Vicki: I chose engineering because I wanted to be challenged. I wanted to major in something that would constantly put my skills to the test and require me to think hard and outside the box. I am really good at biology and was going to choose that, but chose to do biomedical engineering instead to give me some rigor—and it definitely did. I also chose engineering because at the time i wasn’t quite sure what i wanted to do after college, but fortunately, have an engineering degree keeps them door open for a variety of different opportunities.
Q: Were you the only female engineering student in your courses? Did you experience any gender issues while at school?
Vicki: No! There was so many woman engineers at UVA. It was awesome. In my major, biomedical engineering, i think there were actually more woman than men, but that is not the case for all the other engineering specialities. There was also so many intelligent woman in engineering, i was always really impressed by the talent at UVA. Although, we did have mostly men engineering teachers. I think i had one woman engineering professor my entire time at UVA, which was kind of frustrating to be honest, but I had a good relationship with a lot of the professors.
Q: What are you interested in doing career-wise?
Vicki: For the next steps in my career, I am hoping to go to medical school. I am currently studying for the medical school admissions exam, the MCAT. I am not sure what kind of doctor i want to be but i am interested in genetics, forensic pathology, epidemiology, pediatrics and also just general physician health care. Being an engineer, I really like to do research so I am hoping that I will still be able to be a part of some research projects as a doctor.
THANK YOU, VICKI! WE LOOK FORWARD TO KEEPING UP WITH YOU THROUGH THE #PUMPTALK COMMUNITY!
